How to Care for Human Hair Extensions

Why Proper Care Makes All the Difference

Human hair extensions are an investment. With the right routine, they can last 6–12 months or longer — keeping their softness, shine, and natural movement. Here's everything you need to know to make them last.

1. Washing Your Extensions

Wash your extensions every 15–20 wears, or when product buildup becomes noticeable. Over-washing strips moisture and shortens their lifespan.

  • Detangle gently before washing using a wide-tooth comb, working from ends to roots.
  • Use lukewarm water — never hot, as heat opens the cuticle and causes frizz.
  • Apply a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo in a downward motion to avoid tangling.
  • Follow with a hydrating conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Leave on for 3–5 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water — never wring.

2. Drying Your Extensions

Air drying is always the gentlest option. If you need to blow dry, use a heat protectant and keep the dryer on a low or medium setting.

  • Pat dry with a microfibre towel — never rub.
  • Let extensions air dry at least 80% before using any heat tools.
  • Store clip-ins lying flat or hanging until fully dry to prevent mould or odour.

3. Heat Styling

Human hair extensions can be curled, straightened, and styled just like your natural hair — but heat discipline is key.

  • Always apply a quality heat protectant before using any hot tools.
  • Keep flat irons and curling wands below 180°C (350°F).
  • Avoid repeatedly styling the same section to prevent dryness and breakage.

4. Detangling and Brushing

Tangles are the #1 cause of premature extension damage. A consistent brushing routine keeps them smooth and manageable.

  • Use a loop brush or soft-bristle paddle brush specifically designed for extensions.
  • Always hold the weft or clip base while brushing to avoid pulling.
  • Brush before bed, after washing, and before styling.

5. Nighttime Care

How you sleep matters. Friction from cotton pillowcases can cause matting and dryness overnight.

  • Braid or loosely tie extensions before sleeping to minimize tangling.
  • Switch to a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction.
  • For clip-ins: remove them before bed entirely for the longest lifespan.

6. Moisturizing and Conditioning

Unlike your natural hair, extensions don't receive moisture from your scalp — so you need to add it back regularly.

  • Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or hair serum to extensions 1–2 times per week.
  • Use a deep conditioning mask once a month for extra nourishment.
  • Avoid applying oils or heavy products directly to clip or weft bases, which can cause slipping.

7. Storing Your Extensions

Proper storage between uses keeps clip-ins tangle-free and in great shape.

  • Store in the original packaging, a silk bag, or a dedicated extension hanger.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Never store damp extensions — always ensure they're fully dry first.
